As seen above, there are many ways of expressing contrast in English. The most common way is to use but as a coordinating conjunction. A contrast clause usually begins with although/though, even if/even though, however, no matter how, despite the fact that,etc.
Futfer examples:
Despite the rain, they went on playing football.
= In spite of the rain, they went on playing football.
(It was raining but they went on playing football)
(The weather was rainy but they went on playing football)
As you see, we can also Express contrast by using despite or in spite of.
